The District of Barriere held a regular council meeting on Monday, Mar. 5.

The District of Barriere held a regular council meeting on Monday, Mar. 5.

District CAO, Colleen Hannigan, presented the following report.

Smart Cities Challenge: Eighteen people attended the round table that took place on Monday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Ridge. Star/Journal editor, Jill Hayward, provided an excellent summary of the ideas that were brought forward in a front page Mar. 1, article. The next meeting to continue the discussion will be on Monday, Mar. 12, again at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Ridge. There is a link on the front page of www.barriere.ca that provides more information as this initiative unfolds.

Seniors Request for Dishwasher Funding Rescinded: As Liz Gilbertson told council at the last meeting, the Seniors Society was going to attempt to fix the temperature issues with their dishwasher and may not require funding for a new one at this point in time. They have managed to do this and have notified the District that they are rescinding their request for funding for a new one at this time.

CAO Forum: The focus of the 2018 forum I attended in Vancouver from Feb. 20-22 was the upcoming local government elections in B.C. Topics included potential candidate orientation sessions and information through newly elected officials training to strategic planning for new Councils. There was also the useful annual legal update on trending issues such as cannabis, conflict of interest and council codes of conduct.

Wells and Reservoir Project: The Electrical Inspector has issued an operating permit for our wells location after touring the site with Mr. Borrill this past week. The pump test will be happening in the next two weeks at the discretion of True Construction. They are also still chasing a final reservoir leak and may have to drain it to complete the repair.

Solar Aquatics Water Reclamation Centre: The biomass boiler has been operating much more consistently this winter. However, the last batch of chips ended up being too moist which has resulted in an unacceptable level of creosote buildup in the burner, causing the boiler to be down for maintenance until this is rectified. Staff are in the process of investigating additional ways to ensure drier chips on an ongoing basis.

TNRD Regional Growth Strategy 2017 Monitoring Report: The Thompson Nicola Regional District Board approved the distribution of this report at their Feb. 8 meeting. A hard copy edition can be viewed at the District office or can be viewed online at: www.tnrd.ca.
