Kamloops This Week

A Kamloops resident had a close encounter with a life-and-death wildlife struggle — and is sharing it with the world.

Ryan Headlee wrote on Facebook that he was in an area north of Kamloops Lake recently and became turned around on Forest Service roads.

As dusk approached, he noted six deer on the side of the road.

“I got pretty close in the truck and was just checking them out when, all of a sudden, this mountain lion jumps out of the bush next to me with a loud snarl, and takes down a doe, throwing her to the road!” Headlee wrote.

He said he scrambled for his phone to take video, but all he could muster was a few photos.

“The lion drug the deer off the road in a blink of an eye … I watched the deer expire and I locked eyes with the cougar for a few minutes until a passing car scared him off.”

He said in the post the explosive power of the cougar surprised him, signing off with, “This is life in B.C.”
