Ladies weather the heat on Tuesday

The smoke and heat seem to be getting folks down but they didn’t stop 32 ladies from turning out for Chinook Cove Ladies Golf Night on Aug. 8. We weathered the temperatures and when we finished with supper and prizes on the patio we were treated to a lovely cool evening. Seems to me that this is the driest Ladies Golf season I can remember (but I am old and my memory doesn’t always work). I have not had to complain about the damp conditions at all.

Perhaps one night a few drops of rain fell but nothing much to speak of. If a person were to say that this past Tuesday was Susan Newberry Night you wouldn’t be wrong. Susan scored a terrific 46 to win (by retro) low gross for Flight 1. She won the Deuce pot which has been building for a number of weeks. And she didn’t stop there. She also picked up prizes for a long putt on Hole 1, KP on Hole 4, a long drive on Hole 5 and a second KP on Hole 6. There were other flight winners. Low net for Flight 1 went to Donna Salle who also scored a 46. In Flight 2 Deb Legaree picked up low gross with a score of 48 while Ilke Marais followed closely with a 50 to win low net. In Flight 3 low gross went to Betty Baillie with a 50 and low net went to Evelyn Lucas with 52. First low gross in Flight 4 was won by Marie Hakes with a 58 and close on her tail was Trish Thompson with a 59. Deb Rainer had a birdie on Hole 1 to keep the birdie pot all to herself. Loads of lovely ladies won prizes for practically perfect putts. They were Jeannie Webber, Rose Seymour, Marian Wallace, Fiona Clare, Babes Shanko, Brenda Carl and Marie Hakes. Marian Wallace was the top putter using only 15 putts to win the least putt prize. Alice Uppenborn on the other hand used her putter 27 times to win the most putt prize. The KP cuties this week were Debbie Legaree, Linda Ransome, Marie Hakes and Ilke Marais. KP in 2 prizes were won by Debbie Rainer and Betty Baillie. The saying is “Drive for show and putt for dough”, however Marion Wallace, Evelyn Lucas and Marie Hakes all won something for their long drives. Barb Smith landed closest to the 150 marker on Hole 9 to win a prize certificate while Irene Beeton landed closest to the tree on Hole 7 to do likewise. I did have one truly glorious shot this week. On Hole 7 my ball was in the middle of the fairway - half way to the green. A nice tee shot I thought. I then popped up a lovely 8 iron shot that I thought would land on the green but instead hit directly in the centre of that tree about midway up the trunk. The ball landed behind me. It was that kind of a day. By the time you are reading this you should have booked your spot in our annual Golf for Cancer Research fun night. If not, give Chinook Cove a quick call. And I am still looking for pledges. Give me a call.
