Volunteering can be uplifting - give it a try!

In a recent social media post announcing an unavoidable cancellation to an event by a local non-profit group, by a sincerely apologetic organizer, the ‘tone’ in the thread of comments took on a judgemental and quite accusatory nature by a resident in response. As this negativity picked up speed with others joining in on the ‘social’ attack I found myself becoming increasingly concerned for the poster, a person who many of us in the valley find beyond reproach.

This person has worked tirelessly, often giving of her own unpaid time and money, to provide quietly for those in need up and down the North Thompson valley.

When I think about her and so many unconditionally compassionate people that we identify as the consistent volunteers in our home valley, I am reminded of how I often I see the same, amazing people, going above and beyond, never stepping back – always stepping up! They don’t complain, they smile and get to work. In fact, they find this kind of work truly rewarding.

There is no point in arguing with someone who chooses not to see the incredible work and long hours everyone involved with local organizations continually provide with such a willingness to serve and often have been for many years here, from Barriere to Blue River.

During this recent social media post the word ‘duty’ was thrown out there, implying explicitly that one of our most beloved volunteers had a ‘duty’ to make the event happen no matter what. What this person didn’t know were the challenges that this volunteer, I’ll call her a Super V, has faced personally in the last year and how she overcame something life threatening with such grace and determination. She has put on her Super V hat again, climbed back on her ‘horse’ (it’s really an SUV and is back to her old tricks contributing.

Like many volunteers that you know in your neck of the woods, these earth angels just keep on showing up!

If you don’t know the full picture as to who you are talking about, take a step back and maybe bite your tongue until you know the truth before condemning people. Without a doubt they would love to see you throw up your hand any time.

The miracle of spirits like this is that despite anything ever said against them they’ll be the first to your door if you need support.

If this sounds like you, or you are a young person looking to gain experience and beef up your resume there are many groups that would really appreciate your help! Perhaps it’s time to grab your shovel, spoon or weed eater and pitch in too!
