Riding Club celebrates Horse Day all weekend in Barriere

It was ‘Horse Day’ on Saturday, June 3 in Barriere.

This date has been declared “Horse Day” by Equine Canada, who are the National Sport Organization for Equestrian Sport. and is also promoted by the Provincial Sport Organizations as well, which includes Horse Council BC.

The Barriere & District Riding Club (BDRC) is a member of Horse Council BC (HCBC) and enthusiastically embraced ‘Horse Day’ by celebrating it all weekend and the North Thompson Fall Fairgrounds.

The fun started on Saturday with a Western Dressage Percentage Day Competition (WSDAC), a ‘meet and greet’ featuring local teamster Mark Ralko and his team of heavy horses, Penny the miniature pony, and a few of the club member’s horses as well. There were prizes for kids and a concession. The event was organized by Darcey Woods.

On Sunday morning the BDRC hosted a gymkhana, with participants having a fun day and earning prizes from The Horse Barn, Barriere IDA, Country Feeds and Greenhawk. Indigo and Jackie Johnson were the organizers of this event.

Results from the Gymkhana:

1st Division - Alexis Nelson, runner up was Maureen McNeilage.

2nd Division - Naomi St. Savard, runner up was Chantal Holt

3rd Division - Kristina Leduc, runner up was Jake Bradley

4th Division - Robert McNeilage, runner up was Sean McNeilage

The Sportsmanship Award went to Shantana Pounder.

“Events like this are not possible without the help of volunteers,” said one of the organizers, Darcey Woods, “The Barriere & District Riding Club thanks all of the event organizers such as Indigo Johnson and Jackie Johnson for their hard work, as well as the many volunteers that made the weekend a success.”

Following the gymkhana on Sunday, was the 2nd Annual North Thompson Dash 4 Ca$h Barrel Race event in the rodeo arena at the fairgrounds.

The event is a BC Barrel Racers Association (BCBRA) sanctioned race and Finals Qualifier. Competitors ran two races, with the top three in four divisions taking home their share of over $1500 in prize money, plus a cash bonus for the average winner in each division.

The race event was sponsored by the BCBRA, Insight Tire, Jim’s Markets, K&G Contracting, and Bob & Leona Hole. Darcey Woods produced the event which featured many local competitors, as well as riders from Clearwater, Vavenby, Kamloops and the area.

Dash For Cash Average Winners:

Open 1D - Michelle Baker, Open 2D - Jessica Eustache, Open 3D - Kaylynn Thompson, and Open 4D - Dana Foster.

Junior winner was Becky Bradley, and PeeWee was Taylor Andersen.
