PAUSE FOR THOUGHT: He’s Waiting

The teachers in the temple were amazed at the young boy Jesus’ insight of the Scriptures, especially since He had never been to their schools. God was speaking to them the only way their proud hearts would listen—through a child asking them questions that made them think.

Intrigued, they asked Him questions on the pretense of testing Him.

They couldn’t help but see that their concept of the Messiah coming as a king didn’t match the prophecies of His coming first as a Saviour (See Isaiah 53).

Meanwhile Mary and Joseph were alarmed when the first evening in the long journey home, Jesus didn’t show up. They didn’t know that He had tarried behind. Absorbed in associating with friends they hadn’t noticed His absence. Now, fearful of some harm coming to Jesus they hurried back to Jerusalem in search of Him.

Three days later (Luke 2:46) they heard His familiar voice in the school of the prophets attached to the temple. Upon finding Him, they listened in amazement to the questions and answers He was sharing with the rabbis.

On the way home, they remonstrated with Him, saying “Son, why have you done thus with us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously (Luke 2:48, 49). He kindly answered, “Why is it you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

In the association with friends and absorption of everyday matters, Jesus’ parents lost sight of Him, forgetting He was not with them. One day’s neglect took three days to find Him. So with us, let’s beware we don’t let the cares and associations of life absorb our attention to the point we neglect to commune with Jesus, our dearest Friend. He’s waiting to hear from you today.
