The Summer Reading Club at the Barriere Library is a free literacy program encouraging reading throughout the summer that engages children, teens and adults. This year’s theme is ‘All together now.’

“We encourage everyone to visit the library to register and pick up a reading record, new books to read, and learn about events and programs happening in their community.” says Barriere Library Branch Head Pam Rudd, ” Registration opened June 20, space is limited so early registration is recommended.”

Rudds explains that throughout the summer, Summer Reading Club participants will track their daily reading goals. All types of reading are encouraged including reading in other languages, listening to audiobooks and oral stories, and more. Adults and teens are encouraged to participate through ‘Book Bingo’. Return your completed reading log and/or Bingo sheet by Sept. 3, to be entered into the grand prize draw. Local draws will be made in four categories 0-5 years, 6-12 years, teens, and adults.

“Barriere Library is looking forward to encouraging weekly engagement with our patrons through ‘Craft to Go’ packages, scavenger hunts, colouring sheets and activity sheets.,” tells Rudd, “Young patrons can enter to win weekly prizes for participating. The more you participate, the better your chances.”

Barriere Library will also be hosting the following events:

• Nerf Battle in the library stacks - Thursday, July 7, 6-8 p.m., for ages 6-12 (registration and signed waiver required).

• Jumanji Escape Room - Thursday, July 21, 3-7 p.m. Four one hour time slots are available to book individually or as a team of five. All ages. Registration required.

“The BC Summer Reading Club was fortunate to work with Vancouver-based illustrator and artist, Elaine Chen, as this year’s BC SRC artist,” added Rudd, “The title “My day with Gong Gong”, words by Sennah Yee and pictures by Elaine Chen will soon be featured in the Barriere StoryWalk™ in the Fadear Park oval.”

Rudd also notes that seven weekly sub-themes will carry the reading club through the summer:

- Community Connections - My neighbourhood, friends, school, and community helpers
