The first Terry Fox Run in Barriere took place on Sept. 23, 1981, and was attended by 80 people and raised $850. In 2013 the Barriere Terry Fox Run raised $7,596. Barriere now has set a new record.
“We previously had two really big donation years,” said a co-organizer of this year’s run Kathy Cooper, “In 2004 (the year after the fire) $8,963 was raised, and in 2010, the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope Run’s 30 year Anniversary), the Barriere Run raised $10,077.”
This past Sunday, Barriere outdid itself, bringing in a whopping $10,734, thanks to Ted Smith for his large donation pledge of $5,000.
This banner year has now brought the community of Barriere to a grand total of $124,619.09, of money that has been raised from the years 1989 to 2014 by the community for the Terry Fox Foundation, with the funds all earmarked for cancer research.
“We had an awesome run yesterday,” says Kathy Cooper, one of the Barriere run organizers, “The weather was fantastic, it was great to have the RCMP for road control, and Purcha’s Ice Cream stand even donated their proceeds from ice cream sales at the event to the Terry Fox Run. And so much thanks goes out to Ted Smith for pledging $5,000!”
Barriere Schools have also raised an additional total from 1989 to 2013 of $16,054.63.
