Barriere Christmas Parade cancelled, but Breakfast With Santa a go

Time to regroup, make some new plans and come back bigger and better next year

Sorry folks, the annual Barriere Christmas Parade will not be happening this year.

Those who were willing to help organize the event this year apparently made this decision a few weeks ago, but due to a miscommunication did not advise this newspaper of the cancellation.

A spokesperson for the group stated the are “..sorry about no parade this year”,  but noted their reasons behind the cancellation were mainly the fact that no one was really willing to take the reins to oversee it.  They also noted different approaches have been tried over the past few years, such as holding it in the evening instead of the afternoon, and although the turn out to watch the parade was good, it has been consistently very difficult to get parade participants, with the weather always a factor. After much discussion they report their consensus was,“To let it rest for this year and get the community’s opinion as to what they would like to see next year”.  The intention is to regroup, make some new plans and come back bigger and better next year.

However, Christmas is still alive and well in the community, with a number of great events happening in Barriere that folks can enjoy with friends, family and of course kids.

Late night shopping in the community takes place on Friday, Dec. 12, as does the Christmas Tree Lighting at the Bandshell in Fadear Park starting at 6 p.m. There will be  carol singing, a bonfire and the Grade 7’s fundraising concession on site.  The Success by Six Breakfast With Santa will run from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Lion’s Hall with a ‘by donation’ buffet style breakfast served from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and pictures with Santa ($3 cost) starting at 10:30.  The event also offers entertainment, and free fun crafts for kids  A highlight is the Thompson Valley Players Old Fashion Christmas Production on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2 p.m. in the Fall Fair Hall.    Call the North Thompson Volunteer Centre for more information, at 250-672-0033.  If you have ideas for a new and improved Christmas parade for next year call the Volunteer Centre, or stop by their office at the Barriere Ridge.
