The Amazing Race will return to Barriere for the first time since 2019, if enough people sign up before the registration deadline.

Councillor Louise Lodge is organizing the event with the Barriere Outdoor Club, which is scheduled for May 28 at 9 a.m. She ran the race in 2018 and 2019. Each year, the theme is announced at the event — the surprise is part of the fun.

“You never know what the challenge is going to be,” Lodge said.

The challenges are inclusive of most ages and abilities, with six different categories for different teams. For example, a youth could participate with a parent in the youth/adult category, or with a peer in the youth/youth category. There is also a seniors category.

The Amazing Race will be on a Sunday this year, so more business teams may be able to participate. This category is made up of teams of two employees from the same business.

The location on Barriere Folks Trail is unfortunately not accessible with a wheelchair or similar mobility devices, but the challenges are designed with accessibility in mind, Lodge said.

Participants will walk or run through challenges and the route length is no longer than two kilometres. There will be a BBQ at the end of the challenges.

Lodge added a registration deadline of May 12, because an earlier attempt to launch the event in October did not receive enough registrants. The registration fee is $10 per team.

It is important for her to know how many people would like to participate with enough time to organize food and the challenges, Lodge added.

Participants can register on the Barriere Outdoor Club website: https://barriereoutdoorclub.weebly.com/.
