Two Barriere Secondary students made a competitive showing at the Cariboo Regional Skills Competition at Thompson Rivers University, with one of the students taking first place in their category.

Secondary school students from School Districts 27, 58, 73, 74 and 83 were eligible to complete in the regional skills competition on March 3. Barriere Secondary was extremely proud of both students as this was a tough competition.

Grade 12 student Logan Jones competed in carpentry. He placed first overall and will be competing for the provincial title on April 20, 2023 in Abbotsford.

The organizers were impressed with Logan’s ability to read blue prints and follow instructions. Logan’s task was to build a dog house in about seven-and-a-half hours. Logan plans to enter the Carpentry Program at TRU in the fall to work towards his Red Seal.

Grade 11 student Alexis Nelson completed in welding. Alexis was the youngest and the only female competitor.

She was recognized for her skill and talents. The organizers said they are looking forward to her competing again next year and that she did really well against that group of competitors.

Alexis has been interested in welding from a young age. She is attending the mechanical sampler program at Norkam Secondary this semester. She will begin the Youth Train in Trades Welding Program at TRU next year during her Grade 12 year where she will earn dual credit towards graduation.

Congratulation to both Alexis and Logan. Good luck and best wishes to Logan at the Provincials.
