Ilke Marais, says she hopes to be seeing patients at the Barriere Medical Centre by March 26 of this year.
Ilke visited the community early in December of 2011 with her husband, Nico Prinsloo. It was a flying trip for the newly wed couple who were actually on their honeymoon; being married on Dec. 10, in Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa, and arriving in Barriere on the 13th.
The couple say they stopped in Barriere “…to have a look at our town…”, before starting Ilke’s new position at the clinic.
Ilke will be taking over for Dr. Barnard, who made the original contacts with her about the position that would be coming available when he left the practice.
While in Barriere the couple were guests at a luncheon hosted by the Barriere Professional Recruitment Committee, where they met local politicians, doctors, and community members.
One of the items given to the couple by the Recruitment Committee was a lift pass at Sun Peaks Resort. Considering the possibility of participating in winter recreation in the future Ilke said, “We have never skied before. There is no snow in South Africa – but we are looking forward to trying it.”
She noted that they have applied for the visas required to live and work in Canada, saying “All the paperwork should be in order by the time we want to be in Barriere”.
