We often hear about the “Dog Days” of summer. I had always assumed that it referred to the days being so hot and humid that they weren’t fit for a dog. Others have suggested that it is the time of year when the extreme heat drives dogs mad. So what does the term really mean; where did it come from and what does it have to do with dogs? I was surprised to discover that it originally referred to the 20 days before and the 20 days after the Dog Star Sirius aligns with the Sun. Whatever the truth might be we are certainly in the Dog Days of the summer of 2023.
37 ladies turned out on Tuesday night to play some golf during one of those “Dog Days”. There was a pleasant little breeze that kept things comfortable and the balls flew through the warm summer air. Sadly my ball didn’t always fly where I wanted it to. Scores were much better for many golfers than they were last week when the air temperature was much cooler.
In Flight 1 sponsored by Sundown Construction Kelly McNabney scored 41 to win low gross and Donna Salle had a 47 (34.5) to win low net. Doreen Landry scored a 46 to win low gross in Flight 2 sponsored by Steve Passmore of Sun Life Financial and Marianne Lee scored 47 (33) to win low net. The Flight 3 low gross winner was Kate Schilling with a 58 while Evelyn Lucas scored 59 (40.5) to win low net. The sponsor was Kelly McNabney of TriPeaks Physio. Zarina Mitchell had a low gross of 57 in Flight 4 and Liesje Gough had a second low gross of 58. Flight 4 sponsor was Quality Contractors. Kelly McNabney won the Flight 1 birdie pot and Jann Advent won the Flight 1 chip-in pot. Evelyn Lucas won the Flight 3 chip-in pot.
It was a perfect evening for driving and a number of ladies took home prizes for doing so. Long Drive in 2 prizes went to Deb Winiski (AG Foods), Betty Foote (Armour Mountain Office), Jann Advent (Barriere IDA) and Lorie Chambers (Barriere Motor Inn). Long Drive prizes on Hole 5 were won by Louise Lodge (Blue Moon Galeria), Doreen Landry (HUB International/Chad Belbin) and Kate Schilling (Just U). The warm air didn’t seem to help the KPs and the only winners were Donna Salle (Cindy Leibel Real Estate), Deb Legaree (MJB Lawyer) and Kelly McNabney (Barb and Carman Smith). Unclaimed prizes from Salle Ranch, Stamer Logging, the Carls and Campbell & Company went to the door prizes. KP in 2 prizes were picked up by Liesje Gough (EBL Ventures) and Louise Lodge (Sam’s Pizza). Unclaimed prizes from Rainer Custom Cutting and Station House Restaurant will be given out at the August 22nd Fun Night (have you registered your team?). A number of ladies picked up prizes for hitting their balls into the gully and received prizes from Drake Cremations. Long Putt prizes were earned by Kate Schilling (Barriere Timber Mart), Karina Scott (The Local Artisan Market) and Doreen Landry (Thompson Valley Awards). Audrey Rilcoe won the Least Putt prize by retro with 16 putts. Lynda Dunlop used her putter more than anybody to win the Most Putt prize (27).
