Council grants noise permit

Although the May 16 District of Barriere Council meeting was very short, finishing before 8 p.m., a lot was discussed and many motions passed.

One of the motions that was passed was for a noise permit application for the North Thompson Volunteer and Information Centre.  They, along with Interior Savings, will be having another Moonlight Movie Event in Fadear Park on August 18, 2011.

Several reports were received from the Barriere Fire Department and the RCMP.  Staff had been asked by Council to get a report on the number of accidents along the Highway 5 corridor between the Esso and the Petro Can - and this was one of the reports received.  It stated that since January 2008 there have been seven collisions reported: two at the Westsyde Road intersection by the North Thompson bridge; three at the Barriere Town Road intersection by the Petro Can; and two at the Hall road intersection.  This information will be helpful to Council when they have discussions with the Ministry of Transportation about our roads.

Mayor Fennell encouraged all residents of Barriere to complete and mail in the census forms.  The census is what the federal and provincial governments go by when deciding how much funding to send our way.  Every person registered through the census increases the funding the District gets.

Councillor Kershaw reported that the draft of the OCP is nearly ready and there will be a public meeting, likely around the end of June.

Due to the current issue of possible flooding around the province, Council members discussed the availability of sandbags - the District currently has approximately 15,000 empty bags at their disposal.

The next District of Barriere Council meeting will be on June 6 at 7 p.m.
