Giant egg for breakfast

Barriere’s Murray Purcha recently showed our Star/Journal reporter an egg that far exceeds anything a chicken could produce. That’s because it is an ostrich egg. Ostrich eggs weigh 1600 – 2300 gm (about 3.5 to 5 pounds) and are the equivalent in volume to two dozen chicken eggs. Ostrich eggs contain more magnesium and iron, and less cholesterol and fat than chicken eggs. Purcha says a friend who raises ostriches in the Barriere area gave him the egg.
