On Tuesday, Mar. 25, Jesse Miller, of Mediated Reality, who specialize in social media education and awareness, made a presentation to grade 6 and 7 students, in the gymnasium at Barriere Elementary School. Unfortunately, only one parent also attended the event. After the elementary school presentation Miller then gave a presentation to students from Barriere Secondary.
Miller spoke about social media risks for young people and how it can effect their lives. By giving youth access to an on-line audience of their peers, social networking websites provide a fertile ground for identity development and cultural exposure. Youth view social media as a place where they can be who they are, joke around with friends and make certain to stay in the loop about everything that is going on around them. The consequences to this behaviour when un-monitored or addressed by parents can be detrimental to professional and academic futures.
The one parent in attendance commented, “Jesse Miller was awesome. It is a shame that there are no other parents here, they needed to hear what he had to say.”
