Injured bat rescued during Fall Fair in Barriere taken to Wildlife Park

An injured bat given the name 'Bruce' is in the hands of the Wildlife Rehab Centre at the B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops

Many people find bats scary, but one small bat had a fright of its own during the Fall Fair in Barriere.

On the morning of Aug. 31, a small bat was found at the North Thompson Fall Fair grounds, and was discovered to have a broken limb. The B.C. Wildlife Rehab Centre in Kamloops was contacted, and agreed to help.

A generous volunteer Kim English and her daughter Megan drove "Bruce" the bat into town so that he can be looked after. She will get an update on how he's doing in a few days.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada website has some interesting facts about bats at at https://bit.ly/3XgFaiK. There are 18 known bat species in Canada, and while some migrate over the winter, others hibernate, during which time they stop feeding or drinking.

Bats are good indicators of the health of an ecosystem, and help control insect populations. Some bats can eat the equivalent of their body weight in flying insects every night.
