Star/Journal editor Jill Hayward is the new Literacy Outreach Coordinator (LOC) for Barriere and area.  She was on hand Aug. 22, at the Barriere Library to hand out new books to the children who had completed the Library’s annual summer reading program.

Hayward was hired for the LOC position by Yellowhead Community Services, and says she will be working within area communities to maintain, improve, and instigate new programs and events to promote literacy and learning.

“Literacy is an important part of our social and economic well-being, no matter how old or young we are,” said Hayward, noting literacy exists to empower all ages with the ability to read, write and do mathematics, but it is also about problem solving, decision making, technology and social skills.
