The annual Kurt Genier Memorial Slow Pitch Ball Tournament was not able to take place in 2020, and the same is true for this year due to COVID-19 shutdowns.
The first Kurt Genier Memorial Slow Pitch Ball Tournament took place in 2015 on his birthday of June 12. Eight teams participated that first year, with money raised from the tourney being put into a trust fund for Kurt’s young son Deagan.
Kurt Genier was a Barriere resident who loved the game of baseball, and the annual tournament provides family, friends, and other lovers of the game with an opportunity to play and to share fond memories of this young man who unexpectedly passed away in May of 2014.
“We couldn’t do anything in 2020 due to the ‘don’t be together’ rules,” said Kurt’s mom Donna Genier.
She noted that as social distancing started to open up a bit for those in close family groups this spring they were able to hold a small get together and a game of scrub at the Barriere ball fields on Sunday, June 13.
“We had a small get together with a few family members and close friends,” said Donna Genier, “Kurt’s son Deagan, who is now 11, also took part in the game.”
An annual Kurt Genier Memorial Art Bursary is awarded each year to a Barriere Secondary School graduating student.
