The Barriere and District Heritage Society held a Demo Day at the North Thompson Museum and Archives on Thursday June 16.

Students from Barriere Elementary, and the Neqweyqwelsten School from Chu Chua attended the event with students rotating through stations set up at the museum by the Heritage Society and local community members.

The youngsters were introduced to a number of heritage games, such as pick-up-sticks, Jack’s, marbles and a button string whirly toy.

They also experienced quilting and button sewing, spinning wool, weaving with a loom, and writing with pen nibs dipped in ink in the Museum’s One Room School House.

They also participated in measuring and grinding coffee in The Store, learning how draft horses pull, learning about honey bees and making honey, identifying animal prints and visiting The Trapper’s Cabin, using hand tools (the real green energy), and flower pounding.

The society gave a hearty “thank you” to those who helped make the event a reality, Kim Fennell and Barriere Secondary students Brad Fennell, Quinn Morin, Joseph Coughlin, Alice Banzaru, Abby Rilcoe, Caydence Ewert, Thomas Tromblay, and Willow Stefan, community members Mike Burrows, Colleen Nichol-Smailes, Gai Conan, Edie Fennell, Melanie Stutt, and Kim Keating who set up and operated the Demo Day stations so the students could experience the activities of yesteryear.
