I always think of the right thing to say when I have nothing left to lose or I always think of the right thing to say when the time to say it has passed.
Our Grandma had so many sayings and I’m often reminded of them when facing certain challenging situations in life. They seem to comfort me, as though I can literally hear her saying them.
I do believe in the ‘Law of Attraction’ to a degree or the saying about only being given as much as you can endure. Sometimes when that comes up I’ve said, “Well I think the Creator must have me and a couple of other folks addresses mixed up because I’m getting someone’s life mail on top of my own!”
Mom Buck, Eva to many of you, was famous in our family for putting her hand to her ear when we weren’t listening and simply saying, “Listening, Listening” as she wiggled her fingers next to her ear as a reminder for us to pay attention.
If we forgot something, Grandma Lillie would say, “Walk backwards in your head and you’ll find it lickety split!” You know, it works!
When fly fishing with Uncle Bob Miller along the river, the command (I don’t really think you could call it a ‘saying’ – just kidding Uncle Bob) was “Set the hook! Set the GD hook Het!” I tended to hesitate just that little bit of a second and it was just too much for him when he saw the hint of a bite missed by my lack of confidence.
I’ve been thinking quite a lot about misunderstanding, lack of direct communication and how even the perceived ‘tone’ of a text, email or chat message can be so easily misconstrued. I feel as though someone just whispered in my ear while writing this, ‘don’t assume’, a good point. We can sure get in our heads, put our foot in ‘it’ (whatever ‘it’ is) and forget to bite our tongue and think before we speak at times. Just because we ‘think’ someone ‘reads between the lines’ or gets us, doesn’t always ring true.
Was it easier before we relied so heavily on technology? When we went for a walk together, sat across from each other at the kitchen table and had a one on one conversation with no distractions? We could ‘read the room’ and ‘walk in each others shoes’, put one foot in front of the other, our shoulder to the wheel, pull our big girl panties on and smell the coffee.
I think I may be going down a rabbit whole and it’s time to sidestep this pothole, get back on track, shift gears and make hay while the sun shines because you know a rolling stone gathers no moss, beggars can’t be choosers and this sure isn’t my first rodeo and won’t be my last!
Speaking of rodeos, you know you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink and I sure don’t want to be barking up the wrong tree here or put the cart before the horse, as I live and breathe!
I guess I might be headed toward making a mountain out of a mole hill and I’m really relieved now because confession they say is good for the soul.
Feeling quite a bit better now so I won’t look this gift horse in the mouth and I think it’s a good idea to try to catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Remember friends, don’t put all your eggs in one basket or count your chicks before they are hatched because a watched pot never boils and don’t forget there is always a silver lining as long as you don’t buy any wooden nickles!
I may be a day late and a dollar short but I hope you know if you made it this far that I was just pulling your leg!
