The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI), with cooperation from the District of Barriere, will be hosting an Open House on August 28 from 7-8 p.m. at the Ridge Community Centre located at 4936 Barriere Town Road.

MoTI representatives will be providing an overview of the proposed changes to speed zones on Highway 5 within the community of Barriere..

The RCMP have also been invited to participate and provide their recommendations.

An article titled ‘Proposed speed limit changes from MoTI’, published in the July 25, 2013, issue of the Star/Journal, stated that a proposal was being considered for “...changing the speed between Agate Bay Road and Dee Jay Road to 60 km/h”.   Shawn Clough, Acting District Manager, of MoTI’s Thompson Nicola District has clarified that statement, noting the drop to 60 km/h would not start right at Agate Bay Road, but a bit further north; and the 90 km/h zone would be extended to the straight stretch just before Russell Street and the Esso Gas Station, where it will drop to the 60 km/h zone.  This will slow down vehicles before the Russell Street intersection and carry through Barriere to DeeJay Road.

“The intent of the Open House is to solicit comments from the public regarding the proposal,” said Clough,  “We are seeking input from those for or against the changes, as no decision will be made on this issue until we have had an opportunity to hear from the public.  If the only people who attend are those who do not wish any changes to be made, then that is what will happen.”

Everyone who wishes to have their opinions heard regarding the proposed speed changes are encouraged to attend the open house.
