Parks Committee draws up wish list for 2012 budget

Council members started putting together their wish list for the 2012 budget for the Parks Committee at the Oct. 24 District of Barriere Parks Committee meeting.

Items included: finishing the curbs, walkways and lighting at the bandshell; reworking the triangle (near the Petro-Can); improving the lighting around the concession at the ball parks; and purchasing a variety of tools for the District.

It was reported that the concession roof should be completed by the end of October.  Flower bulbs have been planted in Fadear Park and at the triangle.

Several grant applications are currently under review, one to cover the cost of finishing the work around the bandshell, and another for putting in a gazebo at Fadear Park as a joint project between the District and the Barriere Lions.

The District will be coming out very soon with a revised District of Barriere Commemorative and Memorial Program pamphlet.  This program enables individuals and groups to remember veterans, colleagues and loved ones by means of purchasing benches and picnic tables, or by adopting an existing tree within the District’s parks.  The program also allows for sponsors to decorate ‘their tree’ during the holiday season.  Beginning Dec. 1 of each year, tree sponsors can bring out their solar lights, ornaments and handmade decorations.  There will be a contest for the best decorated, sponsored tree.  Those interested should contact the District office for the rules and guidelines.

The next Parks Committee meeting will be at the call of the chair, and likely not before the elections on Nov. 19.
