Plant mangels to enter in the North Thompson Fall Fair this year.

Mangels are of the beet family, with a large root.  Originally they were cultivated for livestock, but are much more versatile today.

The Mammoth Red Mangel, a tasty vegetable, is fun and easy to grow.  It matures in 100 days.  This variety has been grown for livestock fodder since the 1800’s.  It’s huge roots reach up to 20 pounds, making it a high yielding crop.  Cattle love it and pigs can’t get enough of it.  But this variety is not only good for fodder.  It is deliciously sweet and is grown for food, greens and flavour.  Even at over 20 pounds they are baked or stewed and still remain fairly tender. Mangels are high in sugar content and make a delicious tasting wine.  The greens are wonderful in salad. Mangels also store well if kept from freezing.

Due to the mangels long history for feeding the farm, this year’s North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo is challenging area gardens to plant a few mangels this year and see who can grow the biggest mangel for the Fair!   You still have plenty of time to get them planted.
