Please vote for Community Garden

Barriere

The North Thompson Valley Garden Club is currently in sixth place in the race to get the money at the PEPSI refresheverything.ca web-site.  In order to win the funds, they need to be in the top four.

Club members come from throughout the North Thompson Valley.  The Club hosts, or takes part in a wide variety of events including the Annual Plant Sale in Barriere, the Annual Seedy Saturday in Clearwater, and the Annual Harvest Festival held in the Autumn, in Barriere.

One of the main functions of the NTV Garden Club is taking care of the Barriere Community Garden. The Barriere Community Garden provides seniors, children and everyone in between the opportunity to grow their own plants and vegetables, get some exercise, obtain new gardening skills and enjoy others company while doing so.

The Community Garden is in desperate need of an underground and automated sprinkler system. At the moment, watering the entire garden by hand is extremely time consuming and exhausting for the volunteers and puts the whole project at risk. As well, there is a need for a shade structure to provide relief from the sun and rain for the workshops put on by volunteers.

The Community Garden provides the community of Barriere and surrounding areas with a place to come together to learn from one another, grow their own vegetables and plants, gain horticultural skills and socialize. Parents, grandparents and even teachers are able to inspire their children, grandchildren and students and introduce them to the joys and value of gardening. The children gain skills and an appreciation of food, plants and the earth; all while providing an invaluable bonding opportunity.
