The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has launched a region-wide Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling Round-Up, hoping to make the events yearly.
Round-Ups will take place in Clinton (May 7), Cache Creek (May 7), Ashcroft (May 8), Logan Lake (May 8), Chase (May 28), Barriere (May 28 from 9 a.m. to noon), Clearwater (May 29), and Merritt (June 4).
“Now is the time to check under your sink, in your basement or closet, or shed, and round up all the household hazardous materials you’re no longer using,” said Jaime Vieira, TNRD Environmental Services technologist. “These are items that are toxic, corrosive, reactive or ignitable.”
Examples of hazardous materials includes: adhesives, antifreeze, batteries, gasoline, kerosene, mercury, paint, pesticides, propane tanks, oil, fertilizer and grease. Electronic waste which includes computers, monitors, TV’s, VCR/DVD players, stereo equipment, cameras and cell phones, will also be accepted at these events.
“This type of waste should not be disposed of with your regular garbage because it is dangerous and harmful to the environment when buried in a landfill,” added Vieira. “This is why we’re offering the free service, allowing residents to get rid of these difficult to dispose of hazardous materials.”
On top of collecting hazardous household waste the TNRD has partnered with various product stewards including Encorp, Product Care and the British Columbia Used Oil Management Association. Tire Stewardship British Columbia will be participating in the Cache Creek and Clearwater events. Electronic waste will be accepted at the Clinton, Cache Creek, Ashcroft, Logan Lake and Clearwater events.
