Remembrance Day – Freedom
A poem by Erika Edwards - 2023 Age 12
Hear people scream as bullets shoot by
Hear the whistle of bombs, through the air they fly
Watch the group as they pray, run, and split
Feel the searing pain as the bullets hit
Ears ringing
Mind spinning
Too much killing
They’re winning
Bodies limp, more screams as they die
Newly dull eyes, facing the sky
Everything’s cold, what’s happening to me?
I think that I’m dead, but at least they are
Free…
See the poppies bloom near a grave I’m beyond
The sun is rising, another missed dawn
A note sent to my family, killed in action imprinted
Five names on this grave, and mine is listed
I can only watch while my children play
Valuing what is left of the day
I hope what I’ve done will not count as a sin
For the life of my past, my friends, and most importantly…
My Kin…
