Spring into action, check that smoke alarm

The Barriere Fire Department is reminding area residents that everyone should change their smoke alarm batteries

As spring is just around the corner, this is a good time to a great time to check your smoke alarms and change the batteries.

The Barriere Fire Department is reminding area residents that everyone should change their smoke alarm batteries once a year. The springtime change provides an easy opportunity for families to make this an annual routine.

The usual life span of a smoke alarm is 10 years. British Columbians are encouraged to check their smoke alarms on a monthly basis - both by pressing the test button to ensure they are working properly, and to check that the batteries have not expired.

A province-wide smoke alarm awareness campaign is now entering its second year, the campaign continues to gain momentum  as almost 50 communities throughout the province have partnered with fire service personnel and local organizations. The goal is to save lives by having a working smoke alarm in every household in B.C.
