The North Thompson Fall Fair Ambassador Program held their annual Banner Night on May 11 at the Lions Hall in Barriere to a small crowd.
Banner Night is the formal introduction and crowning of the current year’s candidates as they begin their journey in the program. Candidate sponsors are also introduced and recognized for their support. Current Ambassador Lee Dionne officiated, along with Gordie West, Ambassador Program chair Laura Mairs and North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association (NTFFRA) president Jill Hayward. District of Barriere Mayor Virginia Smith was a guest speaker at the event.
The candidates introduced for 2016 are Geri-Lee Genier, sponsored by Quality Contracting; and Sara Sabyan, sponsored by CHLW The Bear Radio.
The candidates received their tiaras, shoulder banners, makeup and essentials kits, District of Barriere and North Thompson Fall Fair pin and a large bouquet of flowers. Then everyone had a chance to take photographs.
The apron auction followed with just under a dozen aprons created by the Ambassador, the candidates, and other contributors. The bidding was active and the aprons brought some very good prices, with funds raised going to program costs. Refreshments and snacks rounded out the evening presentation.
The candidates will now be instructed throughout the upcoming months in etitquette, dance, auto mechanics, makeup, speech, resume writing, self defence and more. The program teaches life skills as well as North Thompson Valley and North Thompson Fall Fair history.
Candidates will attend community functions over the next few months that culminate with a Speech and Talent Night, and then the Ambassador Coronation on Aug, 27. The newly crowned Ambassadors will then officiate in opening the 67th Annual North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo on Sept. 3, at the fairgrounds in Barriere.
