Watch for Raise-A-Reader volunteers around town

Raise-A-Reader 2011

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, our volunteers will be easily recognized in their vibrant orange t-shirts and will be “hawking” a special edition newspaper printed especially for Raise-A-Reader.

We are going to be in various high-traffic areas around the community of Barriere between the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Raise-A-Reader campaign is designed to boost awareness and raise funds for children, family and adult literacy programs. 100 per cent of the money you contribute will go directly to literacy programs in Barriere and all funds will be matched by government grants and Raise-A-Reader sponsorships.

Literacy matters.  Literacy starts at birth and continues throughout life.  Literacy is the ability to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas.  Literacy skills are the essential building blocks for the development of a vibrant society and economy.  These foundation skills are embedded in activities in the home, school, community and workplace.
