Darfield resident Helen Newton attended the Mainline Regional Science Fair, hosted by SD73 at Thompson Rivers University on Apr. 7 and 8. This science fair sees students from school districts as far away as the Cariboo and Princeton.  Helen is a SCIDES student (South Central Interior Distance Education School) in Merritt (the school she is associated with while homeschooling). She is in Grade 10.

She was a Gold medal winner at intermediate level (Grades 9-10), she was awarded the Canadian Women in Science and Technology Award (she is pictured here with the award) and was the overall winner at the Fair in the Engineering Division.  She was one of five students of more than 200 in attendance, to be selected to attend Canada-Wide Science Fair in Montreal May 15-20th. There are many more students from all over B.C. attending.

Her project was called From Plastic to Plants: An open source approach to 3D Bioprinting.
