LETTER: Don’t let your guard down

Letter to the editor

To the editor,

There is an old saying, “Letting your guard down” and that’s exactly what happened to me.

I’ve just come off a period of self-isolation for COVID-19. Oh the monotony! But as long as my can opener stood up to the wear and tear, I as okay food-wise.

Despite taking all the precautions, masks (shields in my case), trying to stay six feet away from the next person and having gotten my two vaccine shots, I still managed to cross paths with COVID-19.

On Nov. 11, I drove down to the cenotaph just to see if anything was happening. Much to my surprise, there was quite a crowd there. Well, it was a beautiful day and what’s Remembrance Day without a little ceremony? However, there were very few masks in evidence.

The medical experts that be tell me that I probably had the COVID on Nov. 11. But as these same medial authorities have pointed out, I would not have been infectious at that time.

In fact, it was my neighbour who phoned me to tell me that she, her partner, two kids and the rest of that family had all tested positive for COVID. So, there was a good chance that I would, too.

The next day, I drove up to the hospital for an in-the-vehicle swab. Sure enough, the day after I was informed I was positive.

For me, the whole experience felt like a mild to middling cold, except for the absolute loss of appetite and sense of smell. All because I’d had my two shots.

Since my session with the virus, I’ve had those of my acquaintances who remain unvaccinated say, “Oh, hee hee, hoo hoo, you had your shots and you got it — so there!”

It doesn’t do much good that I had already been warned that the shots did not prevent one from getting COVID, it just made everything a lot easier. This was my experience.

So, in summing up: get your shots! They are not 100 per cent effective, but believe me, they do make life easier.

And don’t let your guard down, ever.

Dennis Peacock,

Clearwater, B.C.
