The Kentucky Derby is every woman’s chance to express her inner Southern belle!

The crowning glory of a Southern belle’s ensemble?

A standout hat.

Since 1875, the Kentucky Derby has been a showcase for the most stylish of wardrobes.

The extravagant hats that have become associated with the Kentucky Derby did not really come around until the 1960s, when social fashion norms loosened up and the presence of television gave women a reason to stand out. The hats became larger, brighter, and more extravagant.

Hats at the Kentucky Derby have become even more popular after the royal wedding in 2011, an event that showcased many elaborate hats and fascinators.

The Anti Violence Advocates Society (AVA) is hosting the Kentucky Derby Night on Feb. 25.

In preparation for the evening event, ladies are invited to get together on Feb. 19, in the Barriere Ridge at 2 p.m. for a hat decorating party. Bring all your doodads and ribbons, feathers, etcetera, that you are willing to share and trade.

No hat?

Check out the selection at the clothing store beside the IDA. They have a selection of hats, fascinators and assorted decorating options.

No idea how to decorate your hat?

Look online and you will find endless ideas.
