Local food bank says hunger is a constant

Barriere and District Food Bank Society filled 89 Xmas hampers with 5,906 pounds of food

Wikipedia’s definition of a food bank:  “A non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those having difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger.”

The holidays are now over and things are slowly getting back to normal.  The Barriere and District Food Bank Society (BDFBS) would like to thank all the wonderful people of Barriere and surrounding area who so unselfishly donated food, gifts and time to help fill our Christmas Hampers. The figures are now in and the totals are:

• 2013 - 79 hampers prepared for a total of 4,767 pounds of food (including hams and turkeys).

•  2014 - 89 hampers prepared for a total of 5,906 pounds of food (including ham and turkeys).

As you can see, the number of hampers required was up over last year, as was the amount of food contained in the hampers.  Hunger is not something that occurs only on a sometimes basis, it is a constant.  Hence, we need the continued support of our wonderful community.

Memberships for 2015 for the BDFBS are now due and can be obtained by contacting the food bank.  Membership for the year is only $2.00 and we are continually looking for new members and volunteers.  Remember, many hands make light work of any task.

The Annual General Meeting and election of officers for the BDFBS will be held on Feb. 4, 2015, at 1 p.m. at the food bank office.

Please remember when you are out and about to drop your change into our coin boxes conveniently located in businesses around town, or some non-perishable foodstuffs in our drop boxes at AG Foods and the Royal Canadian Legion.

The BDFBS is located at 4748 Gilbert Road and the telephone number is 250-672-0029.  The email address is barrierefoodbank@xplornet.com.
