On Sept. 8 and 9, local painters are invited to come out to the Barriere Bandshell in Fadear Park and bring their paints for the 16th Annual World Wide Plein Air Paint Out and the sixth year that Barriere has participated.

This even is held, rain or shine. If the sun is shining, pick any spot you like in the park. If the weather is not so nice, come up onto the Bandshell stage.

There will also be paper and paints/crayons for youngsters to try their hand at art. Otherwise, artists are to bring their own supplies.

There will be free coffee available from about 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. If you are planning to stay for a few hours, bring a snack; if you are planning to stay all day, bring a lunch.

Plein air painting developed in France in the mid 19th century and is becoming increasingly popular. Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere outdoors and their art work is in direct response to the beauty they find in nature. They use a variety of media, from oils, through watercolors and pastels.

The idea behind this event is to encourage artists to get out and do it, to paint with other artists and share ideas.
