Barriere’s Anti-Violence Advocates Society representative Barb Gordon reports, “The society is excited to announce the implementation of a new program in Barriere Elementary School, the Empathy Project.”

“Thanks to the principal Tiffany Hawkins, our program facilitators Kelly Ballati and Amanda May Harris delivered the first session of the Empathy Project on Feb. 3,” said Gordon, “This program is delivered to grades 4, 5 and 6 and helps the children learn to see the world through other people’s eyes.”

By helping students see the world through this lens, the Empathy Project aims to set students down the path of pursuing respectful and healthy relationships, to the long-term benefit of themselves and their communities.

“The importance of students seeing things from other people’s perspectives builds a sense of empathy as a foundation to reducing/eliminating bullying and establishing healthy relationships in all different areas of their lives,” explained Gordon.

The program also prepares elementary school students for participation in the Respectful Relationship program that has just completed a four year curriculum delivered to grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 at the high school, and was also implemented by the Anti-Violence Advocates Society.

“The Respectful Relationship program was very successful and received excellent reviews from students and staff,” said Gordon, “We will be delivering this program again during the fall semester.”
