Hwy 5 bridge closure in Barriere Nov. 16 -18

Closures will take place between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with traffic detoured via Barriere Town Road

The Ministry of Transport will be conducting bridge repairs on a Highway 5 bridge that crosses the Barriere River starting Tuesday, Nov. 16, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and continuing through Thursday of that week.

District of Barriere Mayor Ward Stamer reports the damage to the bridge includes, “Previous damage overhead, and then most recently a low-bed comes along and smokes the side of the bridge as well. Engineers have inspected the bridge and report structurally it is okay, but they don’t want any overweight permits going forward until the bridge is fixed.”

Stamer says he expects traffic will be stopped on Highway 5 at the north side of the bridge just before the Barriere Industrial Park, adding that residents traveling along Barriere Town Road will still be able to get to the Industrial Park.

Highway traffic coming from the north will be directed onto Barriere Town Road, past the high school and then along Barriere Town Road through the downtown core until they are back onto the highway at the Petro Station.

Traffic coming from the highway to the south will be directed along the same route from the Petro and up past the high school.

“We will have people to guide large trucks around a tight corner, additional people to direct traffic when the kids get out of school, and also other traffic control people in all of the key areas to make sure that everything runs smoothly,” said Stamer.

“I’m hoping that MOT will maybe think about replacing this old girl with a newer bridge because this one was never designed back in 1957 to be packing the stuff that it has to today.”
