School District 73 superintendent and CEO Dr. Rhonda Nixon is resigning after being in the job since July 1, 2021.
On Thursday morning, July 3, board chair Heather Grieve shared with staff that Dr. Nixon has decided to return to Alberta to support her family and has resigned from her position, noted district’s director of communications and board administration Chelsea Isenor in an emailed response.
Dr. Nixon's last day as superintendent will be July 4, 2025.
“The board of education will appoint an interim superintendent as they launch a search for a permanent replacement,” Isenor confirmed.
On Monday, July 7, Grieve announced the board has reached an agreement with Mike McKay to fulfill the position of Superintendent, commencing immediately and ending December 31, 2025, by which time the board will have appointed a new Superintendent to lead the district.
McKay has worked in several school districts and at the Ministry of Education and Child Care over a long career in education. He served as Superintendent/CEO in Saanich and subsequently in Surrey and has supported several districts before and following his retirement.
“Mr. McKay brings extensive leadership experience and a steady, collaborative approach that will help guide the district through this transitional period," Grieve said.
McKay joins Harold Cull as members of the Board’s executive team. Mr. Cull was recently appointed as Secretary-Treasurer until December 31, 2025. Mr. Cull was previously the Secretary-Treasurer at Sooke School District and has extensive experience working in the public sector.
Recruitment for both the Superintendent and Secretary-Treasurer positions will commence early in the fall.
