Information has been released regarding the hold and secure protocol put in place at Barriere Secondary School on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Barriere RCMP responded to reports of an “undisclosed threat” called in by an unidentified caller. Cpl. Robert Welsman of the Barriere detachment, said multiple members of the detachment reported to the school, and had support from members of the RCMP Clearwater detachment, Central Interior Traffic Services, and a police dog services team.

The high school enacted a hold and secure at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. No one was allowed in or out of the building, but those inside were still able to access services. Because of the proximity to the high school, Barriere Elementary students and staff were also asked to stay inside during lunch. Classes resumed and students were dismissed as per the normal schedule.

After lunchtime, around 1:30 p.m., Angela Stott, principal of Barriere Secondary, sent a message to parents and guardians that the threats made were not believed to be credible by police.

Barriere RCMP have stated that an investigation into the source of the threats continue. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Barriere RCMP at 250-672-9918 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
