The annual Andy Aufschnaiter Memorial Cross Country Ski Race was another huge success on Thursday (Feb. 22), with 110 school kids participating.
The kids ranged in age from Kindergarten to Grade 7 and came from schools in Barriere, Clearwater, Vavenby, Blue River and Valemount.
“It was so exciting and the kids had so much fun,” said Thompson–Nicola Regional District Director Lee Onslow.
The annual event was held in Blue River and hosted by Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing. Team members from the tour agency were out along the ski trails to support kids throughout the day. They also hosted a lunch for competitors, families and volunteers following the awards ceremony.
“Mike Wiegele’s team was fantastic, and we had so many amazing volunteers,” Onslow said. “The competitors were great sports and the spectators cheering them on seemed to enjoy the day as much as the kids. We are so grateful to everyone for showing up for such a memorable day.”
Bruderschaft Friends of Blue River Society, Mike Wiegele Heli Skiing and the Blue River Elementary School all partner each year to host the annual event.
“Everyone looks forward to coming to Blue River for this every year,” Onslow said.
Despite a full day of racing, the large group of students didn’t seem too tired out. After the races, they mingled together at Mike Wiegele’s Heli Ski Lodge and then boarded buses to take them to their hometowns.
“With each and every year, new friendships seem to form and the kids can’t wait to return for next year’s races,” Onslow said.
Although there were kids that did take home medals, the director said, “All of the kids are winners during this event. It’s all about the fun.”
