The big fundraiser night took place at Chinook Cove on Aug. 20! Every year, the ladies' club has a fundraiser night, and this was the biggest ever, with a whopping 52 ladies in attendance.
The theme for the night was "white angels," and the ladies certainly delivered in looks, with all in good spirits. The night was very fun and definitely busy! This year we raised funds for the Kamloops Hospice Association, which is also connected to the Barriere Hospice. On top of collecting pledges and pledging themselves, many ladies helped Terri and I with donations, raffle prizes, door prizes, and just extra support where we needed it. It made the night even more special. Terri and I would like to say, “Thank you, we really appreciate everything.”
Thank you to everyone who donated. We raised an astonishing amount for the Kamloops Hospice Association, and it could not have been done without everyone's support.
As for the golf tournament, it was a shotgun start and the play was a four-person scramble. There were a few surprises and lots of winners.
Hole 1: Short drive, Flight 4 went to Nicole Pears. We had an angel make a special appearance on the course for this tournament. Closest to the angel (any hit, all flights) went to Barb Smith.
Hole 2: Closest to the 150: any hit, split between Flights 1 and 2, went to Marian Wallace. Closest to the 150: any hit, split between Flights 3 and 4, went to Rose Seymour.
Hole 3: On Hole 3, you had to use a 9-iron or a pitching wedge instead of your driver on the tee box. Even with the different prescribed angles of the clubs, our ladies managed to hit pretty far! Long drive (with 9-iron or pitching wedge), split between Flights 1 and 2, went to Ashley Mulligan. Long drive (with 9-iron or pitching wedge), split between Flights 3 and 4, went to Karina Scott.
Hole 4: KP time for Hole 4! KP, Flight 1 went to Marla Muldoon. KP, Flight 2 went to Anita Hill. KP, Flight 3 went unclaimed. KP, Flight 4 went to Melissa Bourne.
Hole 5: Everybody’s favourite club made its appearance on Hole 5: the wacky putter! This club is designed to be as unreliable as possible, which isn't really ideal when you want to sink that long putt. Two ladies got the upper hand on the wacky putter, though. Long putt (with wacky putter), split between Flights 1 and 2, went to Trudy Forsythe. Long putt (with wacky putter), split between Flights 3 and 4, went to Darlene Nickull.
Hole 6: Hole 6 must have been the trickiest hole of the entire course, because nobody got a KP, and the KPs for all four flights went unclaimed.
Hole 7: Now, before I go on to the pins on Hole 7, I must announce the names of the golfers whose balls departed from them in the gully: Lynda Fournier, Karen Morgan, Grace Baker, Barb Smith, Darlene Nickull, Erin Gardner, Nicole Pears, Abby Bates, Kristen Abbott, and Melissa Bourne. RIP to all those golf balls. A huge pair of golden angel wings was on this hole. Closest to the angel wings (any hit, for all flights) went to Diane Schindelka.
Hole 8: A different set of angel wings was on the 150 marker. Closest to the white wings (any hit, Flight 4) went to Rose Seymour. Long putt, all flights, went to Diane Schindelka.
Hole 9: We had long drives with a 9-iron/pitching wedge, and then the wacky putter, and for Hole 9 we had a long drive with a 7-iron. Long drive (with 7-iron), split between Flights 1 and 2, went to Loretta Gammel. Long drive (with 7-iron), split between Flights 3 and 4, went to Mary Martin. As well as long drives, we had long putt. Long putt, all flights, went to Rose Seymour.
Since this is a tournament, and the ladies played a four-person scramble, we had a different set of awards. This means we didn’t have to count putts, we didn't have any flight winners or pot winners, as we normally do. Instead, we had high score, low score, highest score on the game, and best group costume.
Our highest score of the night went to Donna Janning, Diane Turner, and Debbie Rainer. Playing a three-person scramble instead of four, the group got a score of 52. Our lowest score of the night went to the "Devil’s Club" by retro. Louise Lodge, Glenda Feller, Mary Martin, and Trish Thompson played wickedly well. The group got a score of 35, one under par!
On the back of the rule sheet that the ladies are given is a fun quiz. In this quiz, whichever group gets the highest score wins. Out of 11 questions, there were two groups tied with seven out of 11. The tie-breaker was won by the group I was playing with: Abby Bates, Marg Anderson, and Monica Lee. It was great to play with you ladies!
Last, but not least, the best group costume went to Barb Smith, Deb Winiski, Susan Newberry, and Darlene Nickull. There were so many amazing group costumes, but these ladies were synchronized and dressed up as angels in white, following the theme of the night perfectly. Unfortunately, I was a bit late taking the group photo, and most ladies had already changed out of their costumes and were waiting for dinner by the time I did. Everyone reading this is going to have to take my word that the costumes were amazing.
A lot of work went into making this fundraiser night possible. That includes the wonderful dinner and service provided by the staff at Chinook Cove. Thank you to everyone who worked to make our night amazing!
Thank you, ladies, for such a wonderful night.
