Question: What made you want to run for councillor again?

A: “Actually finishing some of the projects that we started.” Fortin said they’ve been putting the sewer and water in Barriere Town Road, he would like to continue helping out with the process.

Question: What do you believe qualifies you to continue serving on council?

A: “Well life skills, I guess. I’m 53-years-old and I’ve been in a few trades, myself. I was a mason for 16 years and I’ve been a mechanic for probably 20 now,” he said. Fortin has been a councillor for the past four years.

Question: What are the more important issues in Barriere?

A: The main issue that Fortin talked about was infrastructure. He said Barriere only has one apartment building, which doesn’t do much to accommodate people with low incomes or those who work out-of-town and might not want to maintain a property. “More developing, that’s what I’d like to see in Barriere.”

Question: What would you like to change?

A: Fortin said he’d like to improve infrastructure so people and shops will come to Barriere. He often says, “If Barriere doesn’t have it, I don’t need it,” but admitted even he still has gone elsewhere to buy clothing or work boots.

“Nobody’s going to build a big box building like (Zellers or Target) and put it on a septic field.”

Question: Why should people vote for you?

A: “Consistency, you know, I’m always standing up for what I believe the taxpayers want.” Fortin said he believes he’s speaking for the taxpayers, so he makes a point to listen to their concerns.

He said he believes a lot of opportunities have been squandered in the past and the town should be further ahead than it is.

“That’s where having a trade comes in handy for that sort of stuff.”

How can people get in touch with you?

A: You can reach Fortin through Facebook or by calling him at home 250-672-2150 or on his cell 250-318-2655.
