Avola hijacker will stay behind bars

Man accused of hijacking a transport truck north of Kamloops last month denied bail

A 33-year-old man accused of hijacking a transport truck near Avola last month will remain in jail for the time being.

David Lee Chappell, who is facing charges including kidnapping and using a firearm in the commission of an offence, was denied bail in Kamloops provincial court on Thursday, Dec. 7.

There is a ban on publication of any evidence presented at the hearing.

Chappell is accused of hijacking a semi truck near Avola on Nov. 6. He was arrested after the truck stopped at the weigh scales west of Kamloops and the driver escaped the vehicle’s cab.

Mounties have said Chappell was fleeing police when he hijacked the truck.

He is due back in court on Dec. 18.
