KAMLOOPS – A wildfire is currently burning on the west side of the Fraser River, south of
Lytton. This aggressive fire, estimated at 600 hectares, is threatening nearby structures. An
Evacuation Alert and Order have been issued by the Lytton First Nations Band for nearby First
Nations communities.
Wildfire Management Branch is responding 22 firefighters with air support and additional
resources are en route.
Crews are being challenged by strong southerly winds in the area with speeds of up to 40 km/hr
and gusts of up to 60 km/hr. Crews are witnessing Rank 5 behaviour at the head of the fire.
Rank 5 fire behaviour is a crown fire that has the potential for short-range spotting.
This area is in a high to extreme fire danger rating. The cause of this fire is still under
investigation; however, it is suspected to be human-caused. Almost half of all wildfires are
caused by humans. If a campfire or any human activity causes a wildfire, the person responsible
could be held liable and may be fined up to a million dollars, spend up to a year in prison, or be
held liable for all associated costs of fighting the fire.
