UPDATE: Highway 5 reopened to single vehicle alternating after semi trailer catches fire

No injuries

Update: 9 a.m.

RCMP and members of the Clearwater Fire Department remain on scene after a tractor trailer unit caught fire on Highway 5 just north of the community Thursday morning.

Sgt. Grant Simpson, detachment commander of the Clearwater RCMP, said a flat tire on the trailer unit caused the trailer to catch fire. The driver of the commercial vehicle was able to separate the tractor unit from the trailer to contain the fire to the trailer.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident, which occurred just before 7:30 a.m. between Candle Creek Road and Raft River Road.

Simpson said the trailer was carrying 23 pallets of produce and other daily food items, which were destroyed.

Traffic is currently single vehicle alternating.
