Barriere 2014 Municipal Election

On Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, the electors of the District of Barriere will vote to elect one mayor and six councillors for a four year term that will run from December 2014 to December 2018.

From now until Oct. 10, nominations will be accepted and certified, with the list of those certified being posted on the District’s website as they are processed.  If you are interested in running for council, you have until 4 p.m. on Oct. 10 to get your paperwork completed and submitted.

While you don’t have to be a resident, or even own property in the District, you do have to be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years of age (as of Nov. 15, 2014), have been a resident of B.C. for at least the past six months, and have not been disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in B.C.

Prospective candidates for local government office must be nominated by at least two eligible electors from the jurisdiction where the person is seeking election. However, depending on the local government election bylaws and the population of the jurisdiction, 10 or as many as 25 nominators for each candidate may be required.

Following is a list of the nominations received and certified as of press time Oct. 7:

Running for Mayor are Bill Humphreys and Virginia Smith.

Running for Councillor are Harry Eberts, Donna Kibble, Glen Stanley, Amanda Sabyan, Ward Stamer, Mike Fennell, Shane Quiding, Al Fortin, Pat Paula and Christine Janis.

Over the next month, the Star/Journal will be printing information about each of the candidates.

To have a full council, we need six councillors, therefore in order to have a proper election, at least five to eight more people are needed to step up and get themselves nominated. Nomination packages are available at the District of Barriere office located at 4936 Barriere Town Road during regular business hours 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday or are available online www.barriere.ca.
