Bright sunshine and blue skies were missing, but there was no rain to spoil the ‘Music and Arts Festival’ on July 23 at the ‘Wildfire Dragon Spirit Square’ in Louis Creek. Music by valley artists greeted the visitors as they arrived to enjoy themselves wandering among the booths where local artists had displayed their creations, authors had their books on display, and several organizations were offering interesting information about their work. To rest, relax and enjoy a meal people gathered in front of the grandstand to sit and listen to music and song.
Tracey Corraini, one of the hard working organizers, noted that, “I believe that we have a great program, that will catch participants interest, for instance the Dragon Parade for children and face painting, local authors book signing and with about 20 artists on board we have put together an exciting event; although we have more vendors this year, it is a bit disappointing to have fewer people, so far.”
It was good to see that the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) was there with an informative display about seasonal problems in the area. The young women attending the booth had people of all age groups discussing topics from noxious weeds to bear trouble with them. Outstanding and some unusual artwork attracted a continuous flow of people and those who had purchased an article certainly looked pleased with it. It was interesting to note that vendors and performers had come from every community in the valley; from Kamloops to Clearwater, it demonstrates that residents in the area are definitely connected with each other.
The festival was organized and brought together by several organizations; the Mclure Wildfire Monument Society, the North Thompson Community Foundation, the North Thompson Watershed Committee, the BC Arts Council, that had given financial assistance and so did the Aboriginal Success by 6 group. The Star Journal, Media Esteem, the North Thompson Arts Council and numerous volunteers contributed their time to make the Music and Art Festival a wonderful community event that showcased North Thompson Valley artists and performers.
