A new web camera in Kamloops is now live on the province’s DriveBC website (drivebc.ca), providing real-time coverage of highway conditions in the area and helping motorists plan journeys.
The web camera is located on Highway 1 at Peterson Creek Bridge linking Aberdeen/Sahali and Valleyview.
According to the provincial government, 30 new cameras are being added to the DriveBC network this year.
Priority for new web cameras is given to routes prone to extreme weather or traffic congestion and to sites where there is not already a nearby webcam.
Rapidly changing weather conditions make Peterson Creek Bridge a prime location for a webcam.
Commuters and tourists heading to and from Clearwater and Barriere will now have access to current travel and weather information with a click of a button.
This will bring the total number of web images available on DriveBC to more than 200 by the end of the year.
“The new web camera will provide travellers with real-time road conditions in an area where conditions can and do change very quickly,” said Kamloops-South Thompson Liberal MLA Kevin Krueger.
“It’s a great way to plan and ensure a safe drive home.”
Added Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA Terry Lake: “Aside from the web camera, DriveBC’s website has a wealth of information to help commuters, including traffic, weather and safety information and tips.”
DriveBC is the government’s most popular website.
It provides timely road condition updates, travel advisories, road closure information for provincial highways, weather information and other important links to the travelling public, to help ensure easier, safer trips.
Drivebc.ca was launched in 2005 and received an average of 2.9 million visits per month in 2010.
