No Shaw Cable for NT

Shaw Cable is extending broadband Internet coverage to people living near Paul Lake. However, it has no plans to do the same for residents of the North Thompson Valley.

That was the message from Shaw’s Jim Bray, government and regulatory affairs manager - B.C., in a letter to Thompson-Nicola Regional District chair Peter Milobar. The letter was released during a Thursday, Jan. 13, TNRD board meeting.

“We have previously looked at expanding services into the North Thompson Valley. There are two main impediments Shaw faces at this time,” Bray wrote.

The first impediment would be the high cost of the project compared to the low number of potential customers to help recover those costs.

“The second is that Raftview Communications in Clearwater currently provides wireless broadband. Although a more expensive option, their presence nonetheless further reduces potential subscribers for Shaw,” the company spokesperson reported.
