Large rocks fell onto Highway 5 at about 1:00 p.m. Friday July 22. The small slide at Fishtrap Canyon struck a vehicle heading southbound shutting down the highway until geotechincal crews assess the stability of the hillside. It was then reduced to single alternating traffic.
The two occupants of the vehicle apparently suffered only minor injuries, although the back of the sedan sustained serious damage. They were both taken to Royal Inland Hospital for further assessment.
Harvey Nelson, operations manager of the Ministry of Transport reported that the cause of the slide was unknown and that such occurrences are rare. Wire mesh covers much of the hillside in order to prevent such an event.
